Etymology

From Old Khmer សំតេច៑ (saṃtec), សំតច៑ (saṃtac), សំតាច៑ (saṃtāc), សម្តាច្ច៑ (samtacc, “condition of being supreme in status and power”). Cognate with Modern Khmer សម្ដេច (sɑmdac).

Usage notes

The present term may be combined with พระบาท(prá-bàat) (literally "divine feet") as พระบาทสมเด็จ(prá-bàat sǒm-dèt) when used as an honorific for a monarch who has been crowned formally. As for a monarch that has not or not yet been crowned formally, he is only entitled to สมเด็จ(sǒm-dèt).
