Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sinźʰás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sinȷ́ʰás, from dialectal Proto-Indo-European *sinǵʰo-, ultimately a borrowing from a Central Asian substrate language. Cognate with Old Armenian ինձ (inj). Less likely, a nonadjacent metathesis of हिंसा (hiṃsā).
