From Proto-Indo-Aryan *rúkṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *rúkš, from Proto-Indo-European *léwks, from *lewk- (“light; to be bright”). Cognate with Latin lūx, Russian луч (luč, “light”), Persian روشن (rowšan), Old English lēoht (whence English light).
