From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hstar- (compare Avestan 𐬯𐬙𐬀𐬭- (star-), Persian ستاره (setâre)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂stḗr. Other cognates include Latin stella, Ancient Greek ἀστήρ (astḗr) and Old English steorra (whence English star).
