1. identity theft (the fraudulent appropriation and use of a living individual's name or other personal information to gain illegitimate access to their finances or other resources)

• Not to be confused with vol d'identité which refers to cases where the victim is deceased, namely:
  • the act of assuming the identity of deceased person (whether to gain access to their resources, to avoid being detected by a pursuer, eg. a legal authority, or other purpose);
  • the arrangement of circumstances by the culprit (who wishes, for whatever reason, to be believed dead) such that a corpse is thought to be the culprit's own.
