Unknown. Perhaps a jocular pseudo-Sino-Vietnamese coinage, from a non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 兔帝 (“rabbit emperor”, SV: thố đế), from the notion of nhát như thỏ (“as cowardly as a rabbit”).
