From Proto-Finnic *sänki, uncertain but possibly from Proto-Finno-Ugric *śäŋke- (“to cut”). Cognates include Veps säng, Northern Sami čiegga (“bone shard”), Erzya синдемс (śinďems, “to break, fracture”), Hungarian szeg (“to cut”).
