    Etymology
    
From nevastă + -uică, probably based on a superstitious euphemism. Calque of Bulgarian невестулка (nevestulka), Ottoman Turkish كلینجك (gelincik) or Greek νυφίτσα (nyfítsa). Similar words can also be found throughout the Mediterranean: Italian donnola, Portuguese doninha, Spanish comadreja.
