From Middle Dutch hulde, from Old Dutch huldi. Doublet with hou (“friendliness”), from Middle Dutch houde; similar to the doublets gouden and gulden (both meaning golden). Cognate with Old English hyldo, Old Saxon huldi and Old German huldi (German Huld).
