Etymology

Borrowed from Dutch hangmat, by folk etymology reinterpreted as hänga (“hang”) +‎ matta (“rug”). Ultimately derived from Spanish hamaca, from Taíno amaca, *hamaka. Compare origin of French hamac and German Hängematte. First attested in 1679.[1][2]
