From Proto-Albanian *griδ-(ati-), from Proto-Indo-European *gwr-edh- (“to cry, shout”). Enlarged formation with the suffix -as/t. Cognate to Lithuanian ger̃das (“clamor”), gar̃sas (“clangor”), Old Prussian gerdaut (“say”).
