From Middle Limburgish söethout/soëtholt, a calque of Ancient Greek γλυκύρριζα (glukúrrhiza) from γλυκύς (glukús, “sweet”) + ῥίζα (rhíza, “root”). Equivalent to söüt (“sweet”) +‎ Hout (“wood”).
