Etymology
By surface analysis, *mětь, *měta (“mark, note”) + *-iti, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *méh₁tis (“measure”), from *meh₁-. Akin to Latin mētior (“to measure”), Ancient Greek μῆτις (mêtis, “counsel, plan”), Sanskrit माति (māti, “measure”).
