From Proto-Indo-European *solh₂wós, from *solh₂- (“whole”). Cognates include Sanskrit सर्व (sárva), Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬬𐬀 (haurva), Latin salvus, sollus. False cognate of English whole.
