From Proto-Tai *leːwꟲ (“to be finished”), from Middle Chinese 了 (MC lewX). Cognate with Thai แล้ว (lɛ́ɛo); Lü ᧟ (l̇aew), Northern Thai ᩓ᩠ᩅ. Compare also Iu Mien liuz (“to finish, to end; then; after”).
