From Proto-Tai *ɓetᴰ (“fishhook”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨷᩮᩢ᩠ᨯ, Lao ເບັດ (bet), Lü ᦵᦢᧆ (ḃed), Tai Dam ꪹꪚꪸꪒ, Shan မဵတ်း (máet) or ဝဵတ်း (wáet), Ahom 𑜈𑜢𑜄𑜫 (bit). Compare Proto-Austronesian *kabit (“hook”) (whence Kulon-Pazeh kabit).
