From Old Chinese 鹹 (OC *ɡrɯːm, “salty”) or 鹽 (OC *ɡ·lam, *ɡ·lams, “salt, salty”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨣᩮ᩠ᨾ, Lao ເຄັມ (khem), Lü ᦋᦲᧄ (tsiim), Tai Dam ꪹꪁꪸꪣ, Shan ၸဵမ်း (tsáem), Phake ꩡ်ံ (cṃ) or ꩡိမ် (cim), Ahom 𑜀𑜧𑜪 (kawṃ) or 𑜀𑜢𑜉𑜫 (kim), Zuojiang Zhuang keemz, Saek แค๊ม.
