From Proto-Tai *daːkᴰ (“land leech”). Cognate with Lao ທາກ (thāk), Shan တၢၵ်ႈ (tāak). Compare Proto-Be *ɗaːkᴰ¹, Proto-Hlai *tʰaːk (“leech”) (from Pre-Hlai *taːk), Proto-Austronesian *-matek (whence Cebuano alimatok, Malagasy dimaty).
