From Proto-Tai *ɡuːᴮ (“pair”). Cognate with Lao ຄູ່ (khū), Lü ᦅᦴᧈ (kuu¹), Shan ၵူႈ (kūu). Compare Old Chinese 偶 (OC *ŋoːʔ, *ŋoːs, “pair”), Middle Chinese 偶 (MC nguwX|nguwH, “pair”).
