Inherited from Old Marathi तोंड (toṃḍa), Maharastri Prakrit 𑀢𑀼𑀁𑀟 (tuṃḍa), from Sanskrit तुण्ड (tuṇḍa). Cognate with Konkani तोण (toṇ).
