Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit आर्द्रक (ārdraka, “ginger”) through Prakrit *𑀆𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀅 (*āddaa), from आर्द्र (ārdra, “wet”), as fresh ginger is wet. Doublet of आदा (ādā).
