From Middle Iranian *tāk (“arch”); compare Middle Persian [script needed] (tʾg /tāg/, “arch”). Ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *teg- (“to cover; roof”), and akin to Latin toga (“garment”) and Ancient Greek στέγος (stégos, “roof”).
