From Proto-Iranian *haič- (“to pour”), from Proto-Indo-European *seykʷ- (“to moisten”). Cognate with Sanskrit सेक (seka, “sprinkling; moistening”), Ancient Greek ἰκμᾰ́ς (ikmás, “wetness”), possibly Proto-Germanic *saiwiz (“sea, lake, ocean”).
