Etymology 1
Likely a borrowing from a language spoken East of Canaan, related to Middle Persian [script needed] (kpyk' /kabīg/, “monkey”) and perhaps ultimately from Sanskrit कपि (kapi, “ape, monkey”). Monkeys are not native to the region of Canaan.
