Etymology
Borrowed from an unattested Iranian descendant of Proto-Iranian *sauč- (“to burn”), whence Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬊𐬗- (saoc-), Parthian 𐫘𐫇𐫝- (swc-), Persian سوختن (suxtan, “to burn”), Ossetian судзын (suʒyn, “to burn; to kindle”), because resinous pinewood is easily kindled.[1][2] For the semantics compare մարխ (marx).
The form շոճ(ի) (šoč(i)) arose due to assimilation, on which see պատշաճ (patšač).[3]
