Perhaps adapted from Russian маленький (malenʹkij, “small”). Alternatively, evolved from Proto-Turkic *bāla (“child”), with an diminutive affix -käy.
Cognate with Tatar бәләкәй (bäläkäy, “small”), Kyrgyz белекей (belekey, “low, short”), compare also Chulym пӓлӓ (“small”).
