Inherited from Proto-Turkic *bitig (“inscription”), action noun of *biti- (“to write”) (compare Old Turkic 𐰋𐰃𐱅𐰃 (biti-, “to write, inscribe”)), presumably borrowed from Middle Chinese 筆 (MC pit, “writing brush”).[1]
