A vinicultural loan of Semitic origin, compare Hebrew כַּד (kad), Ugaritic 𐎋𐎄 (kd), Imperial Aramaic 𐡊𐡃 (kd), Punic 𐤊𐤃 (kd); ultimately from Old Tamil 𑀓𑀺𑀡𑁰𑀝𑀺 (kiṇṭi).[1]
